Sigiriya
Often called the “Lion Rock,” is one of the most iconic Sri Lanka’s landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in the Central Province, this ancient rock fortress is a must-visit for history enthusiasts, nature lovers, and adventurers.
Sigiriya combines history, art, and natural beauty. It is an ancient palace and fortress complex built atop a massive 200-meter-high rock. Surrounding it are landscaped gardens, pools, and ruins that reflect the grandeur of King Kashyapa’s reign in the 5th century AD.
How to reach
From Colombo:
By Car: Around 4-5 hours via the A6 highway.
By Train/Bus: Trains run to Habarana, with buses or tuk-tuks connecting to Sigiriya.
From Kandy:
By Car/Bus: A 2-3 hour drive.

Sigiriya Frescoes
Beautifully preserved frescoes of celestial maidens painted on the rock face.
These are considered masterpieces of ancient Sinhalese art.
Lion’s Gate
A grand entrance flanked by giant lion paws carved into the rock, giving the fortress its name.


The Rock Fortress
Climb to the top of the rock to explore the ruins of King Kashyapa’s palace.

Highlights

Pidurangala Rock
Located nearby, this offers a stunning alternative view of Sigiriya Rock at sunrise or sunset. The climb is less crowded and highly rewarding.

Water Gardens
A series of well-planned gardens and pools at the base of the rock, demonstrating advanced hydraulic engineering.

Climb Sigiriya Rock
It takes about 1.5–2 hours to ascend. Early morning or late afternoon is best to avoid the heat.
