Polonnaruwa
Polonnaruwa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a significant historical and archaeological city in Sri Lanka. Located in the North Central Province, it was the second capital of ancient Sri Lanka after Anuradhapura and flourished during the 11th to 13th centuries. It is renowned for its well-preserved ruins, which showcase the sophistication of the ancient Sinhalese civilization.
How to reach
From Colombo:
By Car/Taxi: A 5-6 hour drive (216 km).
By Train: Take a train from Colombo to Polonnaruwa (approximately 7 hours).
By Bus: Regular buses run from Colombo and other major cities to Polonnaruwa.
Polonnaruwa is about 216 km from Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital, and is accessible by road and train. It is part of Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle, alongside Anuradhapura and Kandy.
From Other Locations:
From Sigiriya/Dambulla: 1.5-2 hours by car (around 60-70 km).
From Anuradhapura: 2.5 hours by car (around 100 km).

Entrance Fee
The entrance fee for foreign visitors is approximately $25 (check for updates). Tickets can be purchased at the Polonnaruwa Archaeological Museum.

Dress code
Wear modest attire when visiting religious sites (cover shoulders and knees).

Carry water and sun protection, as the area can be hot.
