Kalpitiya

Located on the western coast of Sri Lanka, Kalpitiya is a peninsula surrounded by the Indian Ocean and the Puttalam Lagoon. Its unique geography, with a mix of ocean, lagoon, and mangrove swamps, makes it a hotspot for a variety of water-based activities.
Kalpitiya is close to Wilpattu National Park, one of Sri Lanka’s largest national parks, known for its leopards, elephants, and sloth bears. The peninsula and its surrounding waters are also home to a variety of bird species, making it a favorite for birdwatching enthusiasts.
How to reach
Kalpitiya is about 170 km from Colombo, a 3-4 hour drive.
Take a train to Puttalam and then a taxi or tuk-tuk to Kalpitiya.
Buses are available from Colombo to Puttalam, followed by local transport to Kalpitiya.

Kalpitiya Lagoon
This serene lagoon offers a picturesque setting for boat rides, kayaking, and windsurfing. The calm waters make it a favorite among water sports enthusiasts
Whale Watching
Kalpitiya is one of the best places in Sri Lanka for dolphin watching. Pods of spinner dolphins can be seen frolicking in the waters, especially from November to March.


Wilpattu National Park
Just a short drive away, Wilpattu is Sri Lanka’s largest national park, known for its leopards, elephants, and diverse wildlife.
Kite Surfing
Kalpitiya is regarded as a top kitesurfing destination in Asia, thanks to its consistent winds and wide-open spaces. The best season for kitesurfing is from May to October.


Dutch Fort

Best time to visit Kalpitiya

Season
November to April: Ideal for dolphin watching and snorkeling. The weather is dry, and the seas are calm.

Mid season
May to October: Perfect for kitesurfing, as this is the windy season.
