Anuradhapura
One of Sri Lanka’s most ancient and significant cities, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its well-preserved ruins, massive stupas, and impressive irrigation systems. As the first capital of ancient Sri Lanka, it served as a cultural, religious, and political hub for over a thousand years and remains a major pilgrimage destination for Buddhists. The city is dotted with numerous archaeological sites, temples, and other historical monuments, making it a treasure trove for history and culture enthusiasts.
How to reach
By Train: A scenic and affordable option from Colombo or Kandy.
By Bus: Frequent buses run from Colombo, Kandy, and Jaffna.
By Car: A 4-5 hour drive from Colombo via the A9 highway.

Sri Maha Bodhi
Anuradhapura is home to the Sri Maha Bodhi, one of the most revered sites in Sri Lanka. This sacred fig tree is believed to be a direct descendant of the Bodhi tree under which Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment in India. Planted in 288 BCE, it is one of the oldest historically documented trees in the world.
Ruwanwelisaya Stupa
Built by King Dutugemunu in the 2nd century BCE, the Ruwanwelisaya Stupa is one of the most important Buddhist monuments in Sri Lanka. Standing 55 meters high, its impressive white dome is a striking landmark, symbolizing purity and the aspirations of Buddhists. The stupa enshrines relics of the Buddha and is surrounded by intricately carved statues and guardstones.


Abhayagiri Monastery
Once a flourishing monastic complex, the Abhayagiri Monastery was one of the largest in ancient Sri Lanka, housing over 5,000 monks. The highlight of the site is the Abhayagiri Dagoba, a massive brick stupa standing at about 75 meters. The site is also known for intricate sculptures and remains of monastery buildings, including bathing ponds and meditation halls.
Isurumuniya Temple
Known for its beautiful rock carvings, Isurumuniya is a small temple with a tranquil setting near a lotus pond. The temple is famed for the “Isurumuniya Lovers” sculpture, a delicate and graceful carving that’s one of the finest examples of ancient Sri Lankan art.

Best time to visit Anuradhapura

Season
December – April: Best weather, warm and dry.

Mid season
May – September: Can be rainy, but fewer crowds.

Special note
To fully appreciate Anuradhapura, plan to spend at least two days there. This will give you time to explore the major sites and soak in the atmosphere.

Remember that Anuradhapura is a very sacred place. Please remain quite, and respectful while visiting the religious sites.

Comfortable Footwear
When visiting temples, dress modestly, covering your shoulders and knees. You’ll also need to remove your shoes before entering sacred sites.
